If you’re searching for what Assisted Lymphatic Therapy (ALT) actually is, I want to give you the real answer, not just the clinical one.
The Lymphatic System, In Plain Terms
Your lymphatic system runs alongside your circulatory system, but it doesn’t have a pump like your heart does. Instead, it relies on movement, muscle contraction, and manual stimulation to keep things flowing. As fluid moves through your tissue, it picks up waste, excess protein, and even immune cells, then carries all of it toward your lymph nodes to be filtered and cleared. When that flow slows down, waste builds up in your tissues instead of leaving your body, and your cells don’t get the oxygen, nutrients and regeneration support they need.
Dr. Gerald Lemole has described the difference between a healthy and unhealthy lymphatic system as the difference between a clogged sewage system and clear, healthy Caribbean waters. That image has stuck with me since I first came across his work, because it’s exactly what it feels like on the inside when your lymph isn’t moving. And the amazing part with ALT and the XP2 machine is I can feel the difference under the wands as well.
How I Found ALT
Lymphatic work came later in my own journey. I didn’t fully understand congestion until my lymph nodes swelled up post-Covid and I had to figure out how to fix it myself. Castor oil packs and ALT sessions turned that around, and that’s when I realized how much this one system had been quietly running my health.
How ALT Actually Works
ALT uses gentle, specific manual techniques that follow your lymphatic pathways, stimulating the natural muscle contractions along those pathways that help move stagnant fluid along. It’s light in pressure but precise. With the XP2 machine settings we are able to work to clear out the more superficial lymphatics as well as the deeper lymphatics that are connected to the organs. The goal isn’t to force anything but gently open up the flow throughout the body session by session giving the body the support to heal and function the way it’s designed to.

What ALT Can Support
The reach of this work goes further than most people expect:
- Chronic swelling and fluid retention
- Post-surgical recovery, including scar and tissue healing
- Fatigue, brain fog, and low energy
- Immune system support, especially with chronic inflammatory patterns like sinus issues, skin flare-ups, or recurring illness
- Nervous system regulation, since lymphatic work helps shift the body out of a stress response and into a calmer state
- Chronic pain and muscle tension
- Deeper more solid sleep
- Acne and other skin concerns
- Feeling stuck despite doing “all the right things”
Why This Isn’t Just Relaxation
A lot of people assume this kind of work is purely about feeling relaxed in the moment. It can absolutely feel that way, but the actual mechanism goes deeper. Supporting lymphatic flow supports your immune response, your ability to regenerate tissues, move stagnant inflammation and support your ability to calm down out of fight-or-flight. That’s a lot more than a nice hour and a half on the table. Think of a nice massage but with deeper health benefits.
At Assisted Lymphatic of the Upstate we offer ALT here in Greenville, South Carolina. If you’re curious whether this is right for you, reach out and let’s talk.
